Beneath the surface, 200 meters down, Kaimana “Kai” Nakamura, 31, glided through a coral reef, his lean frame cutting the water effortlessly. His dark hair floated in the current, his brown eyes sharp behind a dive mask. A Hawaiian-Japanese diver raised on Oahu’s shores, Kai lived for the ocean—its mysteries, its freedom, its heartbeat.

Tonight, he explored a new underwater cave exposed by a recent quake, his flashlight piercing the murky depths.
